They're saying it's a USMC Cobra and a USCG Herc.

Yeah I got Ken's text last night and saw the report just now.  My prayers to the crew in hopes they find them.  They are saying 9 persons total.  I wonder home many USCG C-130s are in the state?   Possibility it might have been the one we saw at WWR or the one we saw fly over on Wednesday at Van Nuys.

Yes, now they have updated the information and indeed it is a USCG C-130. That was my first fear when they refused to say what type of USCG aircraft was involved. It indeed may be the only C-130 in the area and saying it was, family members would find out through the media.

Unfortunately, it is confirmed in the Sacramento Bee, it indeed was the USCG C-130 we saw at Los Al last weekend, 1705.

Was that C-130 from Sacramento or was it from the L.A. area?

Deepest Sympathys to the familys of the crews of the involved aircraft. Cry Sad  .

There are some Cobras at Miramar but most are at MCAS Camp Pendleton. If that Cobra was Miramar Based that could explain why there is no flying going on at Miramar today 10/30/09.

What a terrible coincidence that they all happened to converge on the same piece of real estate. What are the chances in this big sky out there that a low flying heavy like that USCG C-130 would come right into their flight.

Communications definitely need to be looked at/improved after this. The Cobra flight should have been notified that the USCG was conducting a low level operation in their sector, and vise versa.

The initial reports I have read, say the C130 was transitioning from the civilian ATC to the military ATC just before the crash occurred.

http://www.sacbee.com/topstories/story/2294055.html
Ian Gregor, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman in Los Angeles, said civilian air traffic controllers were speaking to the C-130 pilot while the plane was flying in civilian airspace during its search.
"We terminated services when the plane entered a military warning area, which is controlled by air traffic controllers based at Naval Air Station North Island," Gregor said.
"We terminated service several minutes before the crash and instructed him to call military air traffic controllers," Gregor added. "We don't know if he did."

ABC  TV is reporting that 22 year old Danny Kreder was a crew member on the USCG C-130 that crashed. Reports say he is from Southern Orange County

6:00 PM The USCG has called another C-130 to help with the search, This one from Hawaii, the search area is 650 square Miles. The crash occured while the AH-1W helos were in rroute to San Clemente Island and closer to the island. Each aircraft was supposed to be responsible for looking for other aircraft operating in the area. The crash occured at dusk. The CG says there is aircraft parts floating in the water, but no human remains located so far.....
